The response has been immediate and quite instantaneous to my inaugural post yesterday, and most of the responses are quite similar: How do you do it? Or, help me; I need to lose weight before so and so. To all of you seeking the raw details of my process, I promise you this: I’ll share the specifics regarding nutrition and fitness soon enough, but first we need to address the biggest enemy we possess, and that enemy is that little inner voice in the background, yes that one! The one that loves to jeopardize all of our plans, the little voice that won’t shut up, the one that reminds us of our past failures and shortcomings.
Have you ever heard the term “The monkey wrench”? Well, let’s just imagine a monkey throwing a tool-wrench straight at the wheels of a moving bicycle. Can you visualize the outcome? Mangled spokes, some twisted rims, loud metallic noises, and most likely a rider falling from it. Not a pretty sight at all. I use the monkey scenario to help illustrate the amount of damage that our little inner voice can do to us if we don’t re-design it for proper use. Our brain can be our worst enemy if we don’t learn how to control it, even more so when we set the course to embark into a process that will lead us to change. One of the actions I took when I decided to start losing weight and achieving a better self was to take very little action, if any at all. I did not set a starting date, didn’t set a weight goal, and didn’t even think about how long this would take. I just kept living my life the same way I did the day before, but with a few exceptions. I did this for one reason and one reason only, to trick the mind into thinking that life would continue to be “business as usual”.
One of the biggest mistakes we make time and time again is making a big “stink” every time we start any kind of process that will create positive changes in our everyday lives. For example, you must have heard this one before: “Oh lord I’m starting a new diet next Monday, I need to lose weight ASAP!” or “I’ll quit smoking next week, so don’t bother me, I’ll be an absolute bitch!” The big problem with that is that our brain will automatically switch into a defensive mode while resisting evident changes ahead, which is the reason why I used the term “Sail the Process” in my previous post. I didn’t need the fanfare, or the “Pomp & Circumstance” in order to proceed with my upcoming change in lifestyle. I just started, placing one foot after the other. This isn’t a race, it’s a marathon and marathon runners are well known for their exceptional mental strength and focus.
The term “sailing the process” means that I’m not making a big fuss about it; instead I’m allowing the weight loss process into my life in a peaceful and natural manner.
I’m working my strategy while I’m in total control of my inner voice by changing the volume, the message and the tone.
I’m turning that little voice into a “partner in change” instead of a negative and bitter drill sergeant. There’s no need to dwell if we failed in the past, that’s why we get a new set of 24 hours to play with everyday, so let’s start playing again and this time we’ll do it smart!
